Hello Everyone! I hope your week was amazing! Were you able to take some hints from your belly? Did you allow yourself some time to file away or delete some of that old stacked up information? Great! As we move a little closer to gaining inner and outer balance, we turn our attention towards the ether realms of dissociation.
In doing my research, I realized how little is known. The description lies in the plane of solidity, while we live in a state of fluidity. It is hard to even know when it happens. It seems our bodies are just a mere suggestion. We flow in and out and in some extreme cases severe into pieces.
The medical community has divided dissociative disorder into five categories. Very simply:
- Dissociative amnesia which is the inability to recall important personal information around the incident.
- Dissociative fugue is when the blip is big enough a person loses all contact with the self, leaves home and developes a new identity.
- Depersonalization feels like you are watching your life like a movie.
- Identity disorder where a person has two or more distinct personalities.
I read that the split could be caused by a good thought about ourselves getting filed in the left side of the brain while a bad thought about ourselves gets filed on the right. So it displays like two different people entirely. This goes back to the narrowing of the corpus callosum that we talked about last week. 🙂
(: I’m not sure our experiences can be packaged quite as neatly as “they” would like to have it. I feel that if we are dissociating we are probably having experiences in all of these realms, sometimes at the same time. Fluidity. At least I did. 🙂
But the last category on every list is:
- DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED
Which brings to mind the final words from my last psychiatrist. His frankness and honesty catapulted me on a journey that shifted my life and my perspective forever. He said… You have been an astute pupil. You have all of the right facial expressions. You laugh when it’s appropriate. You do all of the right things… but you aren’t in there and I don’t know how to help you.
Boom! I decided I needed to figure out how to get myself back in here and understand why, how and when I do it. “Get out” I mean..
Feeling that I had exhausted the traditional train of thought, I turned my attention to the more mystical approach. I worked with energy healers. Took classes, upon classes, in medical and emotional intuition. I studied with Deepak Chopra and was introduced to the connection between science and spirit and a whole new world opened up. I began to see that spiritual gifts and mental diagnosis have an eerie resemblance. Visual hallucinations or clairvoyance? Auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) or channeling/telepathy? Hypochondria or empath? And for our purposes here… dissociation or astral travel, “the out of body experiences that we strive to achieve in mediation”?
Is it that astral travel is a choice and the dissociation is a reaction? Now?
Meditation was my first stop. I realized this was something that came very naturally to me. I feel we all come to this planet with the ability to pull ourselves back to center. As children it comes very naturally. Some gyrate with repetitive movements, some make repetitive sounds, some stare into space …and the adults freak out. They don’t remember, and these behaviors don’t fall under normal in our guide books on raising children.
The indigenous peoples reach spirit through ritual such as dance and chant… In the east they sit in lotus… Sometimes with their eyes open.
The ability to reach this state with your eyes open… that is the end game. Right? To move from sitting with our eyes closed– and bring the meditative state to our waking lives, permanently changing our brain waves.
What if we gained access to our spiritual gifts to survive, and then we realized that the average person wasn’t having the same experiences so we got all tangled up in the race to normal? From this place, our gifts use us and control our lives rather than us having the ability to using them.
“Astral projection (or astral travel) is an out-of-body experience achieved either awake or via lucid dreaming or deep meditation. People who say they experience astral projection often say that their spirit or astral body has left their physical body and moves in another dimension known as the spirit world or astral plane. The concept of astral projection has been around and practiced for thousands of years, dating back to ancient China.”
So what if we turn our attention away from what is perceived as normal, and for a second, entertain the idea that at one time dissociation was a choice? The first time you decided to leave your body, or dissociate, you chose that… and then it became a habit. Many describe being able to see our bodies or the situation from above. Many experience the feeling of flying… the earth below whizzes by. Some describe a whole new world with new characters. Others describe a mixture: characters from there appear here.
To be able to be free of your body and travel to other dimensions… other worlds. Hear or see other worldly beings in our surroundings… People that travel in the Spiritual circles would be mighty impressed.
What if your process is in warp speed? We don’t even have a cognitive thought and, boom, we are out.
So while others are trying to speed up, our journey is to s-l-o-w the process down so that we can take back the controls and regain the ability to make the choice.
I have gathered some of the tools that were super helpful for me. Embracing who and what we are changes everything! Who wants to be normal anyway? Normal is by definition just average. Right? So instead let’s turn our energies towards learning to slow things down a bit so that we can see the “when’s, how’s, and why’s”… and take back the choice! Then maybe you can have some fun with it! It is pretty cool to be able to go on a journey while your body is sitting in the living room!
I know… I know. But isn’t it cooler to tell people that you can astral travel than “I have dissociative disorder”?
Yoga is a great way to begin to bring order to our brain and create synchronicity between or body and our minds. The bilateral movements force travel between the hemispheres of the brain. Our mind has to be focused and alert and in total alignment with our bodies. We learn to take a step back, witness the thought process and observe ourselves 🙂 One of the great things about yoga is you have to be in your body. It pulls you in and keeps you grounded.
Grounding is a term that gets thrown around, but is super important when we have a tendency to be flying about. It’s kind of like flying a plane without knowing how to land. Before you stand up in the morning, be conscious of where you are. Roll over on you back and feel your head on the pillow. Feel your back against the mattress. Bring your awareness to the sheets touching the backs of your legs. Feel the weight of the covers pressing on the tips of your toes… Until your complete awareness is on the bottoms of your feet. As you rise, be aware of placing your feet on the floor. Feel the floor beneath your feet. Breath into the sensation.
To explore, where we have been and who we are, we have to feel safe. Maybe up to now it hasn’t felt like a safe option to be inside your body. It hasn’t been safe to sit with your eyes closed…
I hunted and gathered and ended up inside the Sacred Circle!
Envision the Sacred Circle as a white flamed fire erupting from one point. It moves quickly in a clockwise motion to form a circle around the perimeter of your personal field. Declare that all spirits, energies, entities, and or people who are not working toward your highest and best step outside of your circle. We call in all of those spirits, energies, entities, and/or people whose purpose is to guide and protect you take their places within the circle. We declare a safe, clear, and elevating space with which to explore and discover our magic. We begin to see life and its choices with clarity and in detail.
Once inside your Sacred Circle, pull up a cord from the center of the earth and attach it to your root chakra which resides at the base of your spine. Be still and feel it attach. Feel what the earth’s energy feels like as it pours into your system… pulling you down to earth! Now reach up into the ethers and pull down a cord and attach it to your crown chakra… (right where a yamaka would sit) and allow the energies to combine. Now you are walking forward guarded and protected… good and love cross easily while all energies that are hindering are forbidden access. You are connected and grounded to the earth while maintaining access to the infinite field of information. You are safe!
In this space, you are free to discover what you feel like independent of the influence of others.
Meditation and Recapitulation teach access to the Observer. This observer is referred to as the witnessing awareness. Recapitulation is the act of watching your circumstances play out from an observer’s objective point of view. I compare it to watching a movie. You aren’t personally vested in any one character in a movie. You as the “observer” of the movie, form opinions based on the information of the whole versus forming your opinion based on the information known by only one individual character. Recapitulation allows you to see truth. (Observing your actions, feelings, thoughts and self from a distance as though watching a movie [depersonalization].)
We are just slowing down our magic!
You will begin to see, as things slow down, the space where you are actually making these choices. Now this doesn’t happen in an instant and it takes consistency and practice, but you’re already doing it. So the point is to slow down and begin to observe so that you can know where and when to jump back in!
Join a group and learn. The energy of practiced meditators will help to balance your energies as well. Like water energy finds its balance. Gathering with others, you will quickly realize that you are not alone in your experiences. In conversation, you can discover others that have already been where you are. Sharing stories demystify and just possibly save you some time and headache. Silence creates a vacuum of stale clogged energy, which creates fear. Among others like you, you can drop out of the race to be normal and embrace and learn about your magic! What you pay attention to grows!
Eating to balance our root chakra. Add deep root reaching vegetables. Beets, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, radishes, onions and garlic, and anything else that roots itself. See more on Gaia.com
The color of our root chakra vibrates with the color red, so red foods are great… strawberries, raspberries, cherries, pomegranates tomatoes and apples. Use your imagination and play.
With us on the outside, very little changes. We open our eyes ten, twenty years later and life’s lessons are stack up all around us… waiting. Our body is our vehicle in this lifetime. We chose to be here and experience this earthly experience. We must honor that. Our bodies give us the ability to take action.
