#DearCherie, my partner and I keep having the same arguments over and over again. It’s always about how each one of us doesn’t feel heard and feels like we are stuck. How can we effectively communicate and resolve our conflicts?

Set The Problem In The Middle

It sounds like you and your partner often find yourSelves stuck, going in circles with the same arguments. First and foremost, if we’re trying to maneuver a situation that seemingly has no resolve, we need to sit down together and put the problem in the middle, detach from the emotion involved, and ask yourSelves what needs to be different.

By removing personal blame and finger-pointing, you create a safe space for open communication, where the focus is on what needs to change.

Don’t Should On YourSelves

Often, we are tempted to discuss problems using “shoulds” and “coulds” and point fingers at each other, leading to heightened emotions and further conflict. Instead, aim to clearly articulate the issue at hand without attaching personal feelings to it. Try to figure out what action you or your partner can take to create a different outcome.

Each word we use has a morphic field, and some create fire rather than resolution. This shift in perspective allows the barriers to resolve themSelves, as the conversation centers on problem-solving rather than making individual feelings heard.

Clearly Define Responsibilities

Another crucial aspect of effective communication is establishing and clearly defining responsibilities within your household. Unless communicated explicitly, it’s unrealistic to expect people to know what we want them to do.

Let’s use the example of household chores (something a lot of couples fight about!) Determine what chores or tasks are assigned to each of you, ensuring shared responsibility within your home, and removing the presumed need to harp on each other to get things done. This way, you can work together towards maintaining an organized and harmonious environment.

Addressing Conflict

When addressing specific concerns, avoid falling into the trap of recounting the past and bringing up unrelated issues.

  • “You always do this.”
  • “I always do everything.”
  • “You never uphold your responsibilities.”

This only adds unnecessary emotional baggage to the discussion, making it more challenging to find a solution. Instead, focus on the task at hand. It’s a completely different conversation to say, “Hey, the trash needs to go out it’s your turn” versus writing a whole story of neglect or failure.

If your partner consistently neglects their agreed-upon responsibilities, it’s essential to have an open conversation with them (and yourSelf) about the situation. Express your needs and concerns without resorting to blaming or accusatory language. By doing so, you give yourSelf an opportunity to evaluate whether the current arrangement aligns with the future you envision for your relationship. Are you willing to spend the rest of your life doing everything without being resentful? That’s your choice.

Make Your Choice

Remember, you always have choices in these situations. Reflect on your needs and priorities, and find a balance that works for you and your partner. Healthy communication means being clear about your expectations while also being empathetic and open to compromise.

I hope these insights help you effectively communicate with your partner and resolve conflicts in your relationship. Remember, it takes shared effort, compromise, and a willingness to work through challenges together.

Wishing you all the best in finding the resolution you seek!
